Progress so far

A team of diversely experienced people has now been assembled to work on the project – architects, healthcare developers, ad agencies, doctors, government advisors to name but a few.

The Government has enthusiastically supported our project and a commitment has been made in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This sets out exactly what our relationships will be with both national and local government as well as the financial support the project will attract. The MoU was signed in Zanzibar on Dec 15th 2007.

In July 2007, we employed the services of a local Project Manager, Nanette Hulshoff-Pol who is a trained architect with many years valuable experience in healthcare in Zanzibar.

In Dec 2007, we appointed Zainab Othman to the role of Hospital Manager.

In Jan 2008, the building of a Primary Health Care Unit was commenced in the grounds of the existing hospital

Phase 1: This will allow a triage system offering basic treatment to those who need it and freeing up the hospital facilities for those needing more complex care.

Phase 2: Will involve redeveloping the main hospital building, particularly the Maternity and Paediatric Units.

Phase 3: Will be the development of the wards, administration and training blocks.
