Where will my money go?
Glad you asked. Unlike many other organizations, apart from the costs of running a small support and development team, all donations will reach the local Makunduchi Project. Whether this is for a bar of soap or the foundations for the new surgery it all gets there. As surgeons, we appreciate critical decisions and see the allocation/ management of finances as critical to the success of the Project.
This is where we feel we can help both in an immediate/small and long term scale. With your generous donations and our focused 10 year plan we hope to prove the Makunduchi Project is a successful, financially sound business model that can be adopted in other regions within Tanzania and in time, further afield in Africa and other needy parts of the developing world. It is important to see it as a business model because that is how we like to manage it - meaning we scrutinize the spending of every pound to ensure it is allocated in the most productive way.
Who runs the show and decides what happens to my donation? A little different to the many ‘free spirit’ charity workers out there, the two founders of the Makunduchi Project, Ruaraidh MacDonagh and John McGrath are surgeons who have had many years experience living and working in East Africa, in particular Tanzania and Zanzibar. Both visit Makunduchi regularly to ensure the progress of the Project and both decide with the Trustees when and where monies are allocated. Ru and John agreed their 10 year plan with the President of Zanzibar and worked closely with the Minister of Health in progressing with the project. The Minister of Health, Dr Mohammed Jiddawi, Dr Malick and many others within the Ministry of Health and DANIDA are working together as a public/private partnership to further the aims of the project.
