The Team
We have assembled a team of experienced individuals both in Zanzibar and the UK who are assisting us in taking this project forward. These include:
Dr Ruaraidh MacDonagh (Chairman):
Consultant surgeon in the UK, currently working in Taunton. Ru first worked at Mnazi Moja Hospital in Zanzibar 18 years ago and in addition to living in Tanzania and Zanzibar for 6 months in 1992 has travelled and worked extensively in Africa.
Dr John McGrath (Trustee):
Consultant surgeon in Exeter. John has travelled extensively in Africa and worked both in Zanzibar and on mainland Tanzania. Recently overseen a hospital building project in Shigatini in the Pare mountains of Tanzania
Andrew Nash (Secretary):
Andy has extensive business experience and has chaired a number of significant public and private companies. He is an active fundraiser and trustee for two other registered charities.
Simon MacDonagh (Trustee):
Simon is a retired lawyer from a major London law firm.
Stephen Guy (Treasurer):
Stephen is the recently retired Finance Manager of Taunton and Somerset Hospital (annual budget in excess of £60 million).
Dr Jon Rees (Trustee):
General Practitioner in Somerset. Jon has worked in a South African township as well as Lesotho. Has worked at Mnazi Moja Hospital in Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in Moshi, Tanzania.
Susie Moore
:
Susie has worked in the Advertising and Marketing
Rebecca MacDonagh:
Rebecca has lived and worked in Africa for long periods with her husband Ru. She is currently a Consultant Paediatrician in Taunton specialising in neonatology. She is the mother of 5 children.
Deborah Hamilton Lewin:
Deborah was previously director of Marketing and Communications for Mencap and now works on a variety of projects in the voluntary and private sector. She has unrivalled experience of private and corporate fundraising and has run several major capital programmes.
Martin Hall:
Architect based in both the UK and Zanzibar. Martin is the lead architect for the project and, along with Nanette and his wife, Avril, has prepared the plans both for the Primary Health Care Unit and the main hospital rebuild.
Brian Haddon:
Chair of the Board of Health Systems International and a Zimbabwean Health Systems Analyst. Over 28 years of unrivalled experience in the health sector. Key specialist technical areas include: health management and systems development, health sector reform, health planning, hospital decentralisation and planning and institutional strengthening.
Rodion Kraus:
Managing Director of Health Partners Southern Africa and a Senior Partner of Health Partners International. Rodion has extensive experience of health sector reform in Southern Africa, and many years experience at senior health management level. As Undersecretary of Health Care Services in the Ministry of Health, Namibia, he played a key role in restructuring the MOH, revising the organisational structure and staff establishment, and creating a new management system and culture following Namibia's independence. Also a senior member of the National Hospital Strategy Project team that developed a strategy for hospital reform in South Africa.
Mary Rackham:
Mary started her working life as a nurse and theatre sister, in her local hospital. Following a long career in human resource and operations management in many business sectors, she is currently the Operations Director of a large nursing home in Bristol, employing around 100 staff. She has a busy life enjoying her children and 14 grandchildren, and will find any excuse to go to Zanzibar to help the project - if only to escape our cold winter!
